Your Product Catalog: From Simple Items to Complex Offerings
Your product catalog is the heart of your e-commerce operation. Whether you're selling physical products, digital downloads, or services, this is where you organize everything your customers can buy from you.
Think of it as your digital storefront's inventory system - but way more powerful than just tracking what's on the shelf.
What You Can Do with Your Products
Your product management system handles everything from simple items to complex offerings:
Smart Product Organization: Create detailed product profiles with names, descriptions, SKUs, and barcodes that make sense to both you and your customers.
Flexible Pricing: Set regular prices, apply discounts with expiration dates, handle VAT/taxes, and even create different pricing tiers for different customer types.
Inventory Control: Track stock levels, set up low-stock alerts, and control how many items customers can add to their cart (great for limited editions!).
Visual Appeal: Upload gorgeous product images, create photo galleries, and organize everything into logical categories that help customers find what they want.
Product Variations: Sell the same item in different sizes, colors, or configurations - each with their own pricing and stock levels.
Customer Feedback: Let customers leave reviews and ratings, then manage which ones appear on your store.
Digital Product Codes: Generate unique access codes for digital products, licenses, or special promotions.
Managing Your Product Catalog
Your Product Dashboard
When you open the Products section, you'll see your entire catalog at a glance. Each product shows the essentials: name, type, SKU, and current price - everything you need for quick decision-making.
Finding Products Fast:
- Search: Type any part of a product name, SKU, or barcode to find it instantly
- Filter by category: Focus on specific product lines or types
- Sort smartly: Click column headers to sort by price, popularity, or stock levels
- Status filters: Show only active products, drafts, or out-of-stock items
Adding New Products (The Smart Way)
Click "Create Product" and you'll see an organized form with everything neatly arranged in tabs. Don't worry - you don't need to fill out everything at once!
Essential Details Tab
Product Type: Choose wisely - this affects everything else:
- Physical Product: Something you ship (books, clothing, gadgets)
- Digital: Downloads, software, online courses
- Service: Consultations, repairs, subscriptions
Name & URL: Your product name becomes its web address automatically, but you can customize it for better SEO.
Description: Write for humans, not search engines. What would you want to know if you were buying this?
SKU & Barcode: These are your internal tracking codes. SKUs help you organize inventory, barcodes help with scanning if you have physical stock.
Pricing That Makes Sense
Basic Price: What you normally charge - simple and straightforward.
Discounts: Set percentage discounts with automatic expiration dates. Perfect for sales campaigns.
Multi-tier Pricing: Offer different prices for different customer types (retail vs. wholesale) or quantity breaks.
Shipping Settings: Tell the system if this product needs to be shipped or if it's pickup/digital only.
Smart Stock Management
Inventory Tracking: Track quantities, get alerts when you're running low, set maximum purchase limits for high-demand items.
Cart Controls: Set minimum and maximum quantities per order - great for bulk items or limited editions.
Make It Look Great (SEO Tab)
Product Images: Upload a main product photo and additional gallery images. Good photos sell products!
Categories: Put products where customers expect to find them. You can assign multiple categories.
SEO Details: Product descriptions for search engines, relevant tags, and keywords that help customers find you.
Product Variations (Advanced)
Turn on "Has Options" to create variations like:
- T-shirts in different sizes and colors
- Software in basic/premium versions
- Services at different price points
Each variation can have its own price, stock level, and even its own photos.
Bulk Operations That Save Time
Import & Export Made Easy
Exporting Your Catalog: Hit the "Export" button and get a CSV file with all your product data. Perfect for:
- Creating backups of your catalog
- Analyzing your products in Excel
- Sharing product lists with suppliers or partners
Bulk Importing: Have lots of products to add? Create a CSV file with these columns:
name
(what customers see)slug
(web-friendly URL)price
(numbers only)sku
(your tracking code)is_activated
(1 for active, 0 for draft)
Upload your file, map the columns, and import hundreds of products at once.
Advanced Product Features
Customer Reviews Management
Let customers rate and review your products, then manage which reviews appear publicly. Great reviews build trust and help other customers make decisions.
Digital Product Codes
For digital products, software licenses, or special promotions, generate unique access codes in bulk. Set expiration dates, track usage, and maintain security for your digital offerings.
Product Management Best Practices
Start Simple, Grow Complex
- Begin with basic products - just name, price, and description
- Add complexity gradually - variations, multi-tier pricing, advanced SEO
- Test as you go - make sure everything works from a customer's perspective
Keep Your Catalog Clean
- Regular audits: Remove discontinued products or merge duplicates
- Update pricing: Keep costs current with your suppliers and market changes
- Fresh photos: Update product images periodically - they get dated
- SEO maintenance: Update product descriptions and keywords based on what customers actually search for
Watch Your Data
- Monitor best-sellers: Understanding what sells helps you stock smarter
- Track low performers: Maybe they need better descriptions or different pricing
- Review customer feedback: Product reviews and support tickets reveal improvement opportunities
- Analyze search terms: See what customers search for but don't find
Your product catalog is never "finished" - it evolves with your business, your customers, and market trends. The better you organize and maintain it, the easier it becomes to manage and the more it helps your sales.
